Existing wood frame basement walls….how to insulate?
Hi Guys.
So I’m faced with another dilemma regarding my basement project. Right now we ripped off some wood paneling to discover a 2×4 wall held off about 1/2″ to 1″ off the CMU wall. Originally they poly’ed the concrete wall. Noting the black mold on it, we ripped it out.
Typically I like to finish basement walls with a 2″ rigid insul. and metal stud wall. But it seems like a huge waste of time/money to rip out the existing wood wall. So here’s the dilemma how do I insulate this exist. wood frame wall? Or should I just rip it out, and start it off the right way….
Insulating the exising wall – I was thinking of stuffing the cavities with two inch rigid insulation but cutting them to the cavity size seems like a PITA…plus I worry the back edge of the wood will start to rot where its not insulated…
Thoughts?
Thanks.

First apply expanding foam to seal the lumber to the CMU. Then cut loose fitting foam and use expanding foam again to seal the foam to the lumber.
Let us know how it turns out.
