Experience downsizing a heat pump?
Anyone ever had any experience on downsizing a heat pump?
I have a 3 1/2 ton package heat pump unit downstairs which does not run much even in hot weather. I have weatherized the house quite a bit.
If I put in a 3 ton when this one dies (its old now) will it work OK with the existing duct work?
Seem better for the duct work to be slightly too large rather than too small?
Anyone ever downsized a unit?
Thans.

When you get ready to replace, get the full spec sheets from the manufacturer and do a spreadsheet on life cycle costs for your weather area. SEER and HSFP are only guidelines, and can be misleading for a mild climate. You didn't say how much the unit needed to work when heating? Often the 3-1/2 and 4 T sizes are the more efficient (highest COP across a wide temp range), so going to a smaller unit may not be cost efective over the life of the hardware after adding power costs.
