I’ve never worked with Azek or any of the other brands of PVC trim out there, but I’m considering it for my own house this summer. I was planning on using HardieTrim, but all the installation horror stories I read here convinced me to look elsewhere.
Reason I ask about Royal is that I see our local Menard’s is running a special on their trim boards which brings them down REAL close to the price of HardieTrim for my application.
Is there really that much difference between the “good stuff” (AKA Azek) and an “off brand” like Royal?

I never used azek, but have used a good bit of royal molding. I like it. It's easy to blow a nail through the surface, so be carefull.
Royal is not an off brand, they have been around for quite awhile. I believe they are a Canadian company.
That's good news. I just assumed that they were an off brand because I have been doing a ton of reading about cellular PVC trim the last few days, and have never heard of Royal among the 3 or 4 big names. Thanks for the info.
They have sold vinyl siding in the US for 20 yrs. My experience is with the vinyl siding, and I have nothing but good to say about it!
IIRC Royal is bankrupt. not 100% sure
Stopped into my local lumberyard, and they carry the whole Royal product line. Sounded like they had just gotten it, too. After looking closer at the stuff, I don't think I want it on my house. After it's painted, it might be passable, but the wood grain sure looks fake and nasty. Back to HardieTrim for me.
Royal has been around for a long time. My parent's house was sided with Royal siding about 15 years ago. It's pretty well faded, but still within acceptable limits (according to Royal). No problems with them though that I can tell of. I'd be pretty comfortable using the vinyl.
