Exposed fastener metal roof with solar panels
I just began building a 1 bedroom ADU. I am doing as much as I can myself with a couple of helpers. The goal is to build a pretty good cottage without going into debt – turns out to be quite the challenge!
I love the look of a metal roof and standing seam is too expensive. I built a barn and shed with exposed fastener metal roofing and there’s a lot to be said for it and I think I’ll use it on the cottage. The roof is well situated for solar and I would like to install solar panels at some future point.
Here’s my question: Does anyone have any knowledge of or experience with some type of bracket that could be installed when the roof goes on so that solar panels can be added later?
Thanks, Walt

I’ve seen roof boots used to flash a support going through the roof- the same kind you would use on a plumbing vent pipe. You might need to have a piece of plate welded to the top to piece of 1.5” tubing. Seal the pipe to the boot with silicone.

Absolutely, it is commendable that you are embarking on the adventure of constructing your ADU, and it's fantastic that you have a support system in place. Consider the integration of solar panels is a strategic decision, particularly if your roof's orientation is favorable for harnessing solar energy. Planning for sustainable solutions like this demonstrates foresight and an environmentally conscious approach to the project. Keep up the great work....
Standing seam metal roof panels are better equipped to add PV panels later. There are numerous clamp-type devices made to support the rack for PV panels. These devices do not require any penetration through the metal roofing.
Agree 100%. Standing seam is what we use here in FL for solar.
Thanks for the input!
