tanx, andy. i shoulda been more specific. to prevent bleaching, maintain existing colour, smooth-rough finish,(no planing glaze, think the white is band sawn). used a few years ago a water-cleaned oil-type finish that seems to be holding up ('cept client used "cedar" toned ppigmented stuff--read "orange". but it has faded to an almost natural tone three years later.) I will not ever again recommend waiting to season wood before finishing--too much checking, drying-out, splitting, and greying. {fine if an aged finish is what's desired). No concerns about bleed-thru with with clear stain.
Rough or planned finish? Planned side must be sanded otherwise the MILL GLAZE will ruin any coating. Just won't stick.
just looked up "mill-glaze". W.red cedar folks say, basically, its b.s.
Fortunately. this stuff not super smooth, anyway. But thanks, pel.

Never heard that b/4 on siding and I've stained miles and miles of every kind of cedar siding there is over the past 32 years...on wood we make cabs with yes..but the mill glaze just doesn't allow the wood to absorb the stain right is the reason I belive and in soft woods you need conditioner to boot...store bought or self made (store bought is cheap enough)
