I do not see any useful purpose for an exterior siding “water table”. Can anyone think of any? Just appearance maybe?

A water table "throws" the water away from the foundation. It prevents infiltration, due to capillary action, because it has a small channel plowed on the underside.
It's been many moons since I've installed a true "water table".
They actually look nice too!
*The water table has the simple purpose mr. blue noted above. It's presence on your house, along with several other frequently eliminated trim details, also proclaims to those in the know, that your house is the real deal, and not some pre-packaged,phony-assed,faux-finished,fake filled pile of pretensions. It is like real butter, coffee with all the caffeine, beer that isn't LITE,red meat, chicken that hasn't been de-boned de-skinned de-flavored, filterless cigarettes and "un-protected" sex(with your first and only wife). In short it is the way things are supposed to be.Don't change it. hold the line,Stephen

*Stephen:Want to come and work on my crew!!??Dave
*Creature,A very flattering offer,I am Sure.I wish I had offers like that back in '81 when I needed a job.( then I wouldn't have had to go out and invent my own).I am sure that there are many others like us out there but they are just keeping quiet. Fight the good fight, even if it is a loosing battle, Stephen
*Have you beenlookin' in my grocery basket?
*81 sucked!Do you get the feeling that 81 is coming again?Another story. It's about 81.There wasn't a thing being built. And the little remodeling was taking me many miles. I repeat, there weren't any house being stood up!A builder friend called me. He wanted me to "bid" a house. I bid the house at $12,000. I didn't get the job.A few months later, he called again. He wanted a bid for the same house. I said "look, if I bid it again, I won't get the job, tell me what you want it dine for, and we can make a deal". He wanted it for 6,000: half when I was done, half at the closing. I told him I'd have to check with my guys.I told them: I'll pay you $12.00 per hour, "half now, half at closing. They all said yes. That's how I did the deal, and I paid them all at closing. That was the only house that I roughed that year!I don't know how I survived, but somehow just the right job would appear when I needed it most! And you know what happened when I was framing that job? The union came out and bitched at me, that I wasn't paying fair wages!Blue
