I just replaced the lower windows and the exterior woodwork on the bottom 3 feet of a 2 story baywindow unit. It had rotted around the bottom due to water infiltration. I addressed the causes of the problem by using propler flashing, jambsills in the window openings, dripedges, dripcaps and so on.
To replace the exterior wood work of the bay that had gone bad, I used azek. I carried the azek from the surface of the deck to 3 feet up the wall and then will make a transition to the existing wood with a chair rail.
A question that came to mind while doing this, is that azek, being pvc, would be a solid vapor barrior. Of corse for small peices of trim work, this is no problem. But it’s my understanding that a vapor barrier on the exterior side of the wall is asking for problems with condensation inside the wall. How big of an area could you cover with PVC composite before you start trapping moisture?
I’m not planning to side an entire house or anything like that, but I could see doing exterior waynscoting with the stuff.
