Hello all,
I have an existing set of stairs that requires replacement. They are 4X12 cedar treads/stringers, approx. 20yrs old, completely exposed to the weather.
My question: Is there a better technique/detail to address the bottom of the stringer? It currently terminates directly on the main slab and has, (of course) rotted.
Thanks

Make up some pads out of pvc trim or even trex. Seal the bottom of the end grain stringer and apply that plastic pad to the bottom.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

I rebuilt my parent's stairs with 3x10 PT stringers. All cut edges treated with liquid epoxy. The bottoms (also treated with epoxy) rested on 2x4 plastic sleepers in line with the stringers. They were expansion bolted to the slab. The plastic is from Epic and is popular in landscaping as a lawn/planter border.
