Before you say check the archives – I did and read though pages and pages.
Can anyone can give me a link to a prior on this?
Home is California and the problem is on south facing wall. Eave boards and decorative trim does not hold paint – in places. Main problem areas are around the entry door and over a kitchen window. Last time scraped and sanded and primed the problem areas, still same problem. It appears first as a circle (like a knot, but it isn’t)then turns to full scale peeling.
Is there a special prep before painting that I’m not doing that would correct this problem? I am considering trying to remove the paint completly and using an opaque stain instead. Any comments on stain would be appreciated.

what kind of siding do you have ?
it sounds like water vapor is passing thru the back of the trim and pulling the paint off...
have you tried latex paint.?. it allows more vapor to pass as opposed to oil
the stain would also allow more vapor to pass..
now..the SOURCE of the moisture vapor should also be explored
*Mike is right. It sounds mostly like moisture boiling the paint off from behind. The clue is that the kitchen is near- lots of moisture genereated there. You might have similar problem is the bathroom area, right? The other thought is that you have redwood siding and trim. It takes a special primer to bond well to it and I know redwood is more common in Calif.
