Posting question for a painter friend of mine. Client of his has mahogany trim on outside of her house. She wants the nail holes filled and then the trim stained.
What is a good filler that could match the color? I’ve seen Durham’s wood filler but its white? What would you use to stain it the color of the trim? I think the trim might already be stained but not sure.

Isn't Durhams water based? If so, maybe artists' acrylic paints would tint it. Otherwise oil paint. Guess I'd try some first--just tinting and letting dry on a board or something because I imagine it will lighten as it dries. Kepp note of how many drops of which colors.
No exterior filler will be the right color. I think I would use wax crayons to match after the coat of stain and perhaps after the first coat of exterior finish. The match will be so close the nail holes will be hard to see.
Plan b would be to use a mix of mahogany sawdust and titebond 3 ; fill and sand before stain...

For stained wood, you should stain & varnish first, then apply the putty or filler or whatever. if you putty first, you stand the chance of smearing something on the wood that will interfere with the finish.
Durhams Rock Hard is water based, and the instructions on the can say that it can be tinted.
Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
right, stain and finish first.
Durhams is poor for exterior, IMO
i'd go with wax based filer after stain and first coat of finish
