A client wants to build some very large custom fireplaces. The largest will have a fire box 8 feet long and 6 feet high. Floor to ceiling height is about 30 feet. He desires a masonry box and structure with stone veneer. He wants the option of using a gas log (Where can we find an 8 foot long gas log?) or removing the gas log and burning wood. He also is interested in having a heat recovery chamber type of flue, similar to what Tulikivi offers. I am looking for suggestions for design and materials. It is critical that the fireplace draw properly. Does anyone have any sources for design and materials of a fireplace with this description?

Wow!
That is one monsterous flue! A 36x36 face on a Rumford yields a 13 inch square flue. If opening to flue is directly proportionate then you are looking at a 20X30 flue. Lots of air whistling up that baby.
Hopefully it isn't anywhere that really needs heat generation. Then again the servants that can carry 8 foot logs in to stoke the fire will be warm long before a match is lit.
There are sources to consult and here is one... http://www.rumford.com/
http://www.rumford.com/R9660plan.gif is a 96 inch wide plan.
96" gas log? You are on your own.
Thanks for the advice. I'll check out the sites you suggest.
