The show was in our area this week. It’s amazing what they accomplished in about thirty hours. They had the home framed and dried in and the exterior was almost done.

That's the one in Colonie, right? Word has it they came up here to shop in a couple of the local places with rustic stuff, maybe to add some kind of woodsy touch.
That's the Colonie home. I tried to volunteer but they had more than enough people, I even asked one of my code enforcement friends if I could help carry his clipboard. He does the commercial inspections and did not think he would be called in.
I poured some 8000 psi concrete yesterday for something to be announce later. 4000 psi in 48 hours.
My question is what problems do they have in say six months? With the building going up that fast you would think there would be settling issues, drywall pops and cracks, tile falling off the shower and so on. I just wonder if they have more than the norm or if it is just like any other house.
I wonder about that too...haven't seen a story about it too. Almost every week's show they do a house, how do they get the money for all that and give it away to those special people?
I did see an article where some of the families were having trouble paying the new taxes. Some were in line to lose the house. Going from property worth $50,000 to a $450,000 place is a big tax hike. Even though building a new place for the families is nice it doesn't always solve some of the other troubles they may have going on in their lives.
Makes you wonder if they would have been better off if the show had built them something modest instead, but I suppose it wouldn't make for good TV.
They not only get hit with higher property taxes but likely have to pay income tax on the increased value in the year it was renovated. That could be a major amount of money.
Here's a link to an article on MSNBC about how the show attempts to get around the tax laws. Also mentions some problems with one of the houses :http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4933223/
I think the show should take that into consideration, I think it's great what they do for the familys, but they should make sure the family can afford the new house.
On the other hand, if the house is mortgage free when they recieve it, I would think the taxes would be more managable.
I would like to see if they keep the houses up. Lots of times when they show the old houses, maintenance has not been done on the houses. One homeowner was complaining about poor craftsmanship in old house....there was a whole in one bedroom wall. Any homeowner could see what caused it...the bedroom door knob! And then Tye said there was no insulation in the wall (interior). Yes, that was shoddy construction....not.You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.

Better questions is if they can afford to keep it up.
Going from 1200 sqft to 4000 adds a lot of new work and expense
"On the other hand, if the house is mortgage free when they recieve it, I would think the taxes would be more managable. On the other hand, if the house is mortgage free when they recieve it, I would think the taxes would be more managable."Not exactly. As of a couple of weeks ago they where still solicity for the funds to pay off the mortage on the one that they just did in KC.An article in the Starless about this and the taxes said that they do council the people on money and have not had any one lose a house yet.Now they have away around income taxes on the house (now no one knows if that will fly or not). But there will be on the cars.IIRC the new house is being assesed at $250k and the old one was about $125.The house it self would have a value of around $450k. But becuase it is in a area of other $100k house it would never sell for that..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
and the fed would properly want the extra value as income.
