Here is something we slapped up last Thursday. The shape of the mantleboard emulates the roofline over the screened porch outside, which I showed in another posting when it was framed.
OPEN ONLY THE JPEG PIC. The other attachment is a bitmap, and should have not been attached.
The mantleboard, a glueup that required vacuum bagging, is 144 inches end to end, 6h x 7d in x-section, with a builtup core of MDF, top and bottom skins of 1/8 resawn select cherry, and its front is an edgeglued arrangement of select 5/4 cherry.
A local shop made it for us, to our specs, and we supplied fullsized CAD plots of the curves, which made core makeup easy.
We aren’t done trimming yet, but put up enough so the tile guy can do the marble facing and returns on the fireplace front, plus the hearth.
Flooring is select red birch, one grade down from clear.

Here is a fresh pic of the outside of the porch, and you can see that eyebrow roofline the mantleboard emulates.
