A facia is typically 5 to 8 inches depending on the size and design of the structure. It is usually at least wide enough to accept guttering with the proper fall for the given run. Rakes also have what some call rake facia or simply rake boards. They vary in size according to design and size of the structure.
*As wide as the height of the plumb cut on the rafter plus allowances for soffit material and decking. Usually down here with 2x4(trusses) or 2x6 rafters we use a 1x6 or 1x4 with a shingle strip on a pitched roof. Just got thru with a "flat roof" addition and the facia board was a 1x12 because the "plumb cut" was about 10" after ripping the 1x12's for a slight slope.
*as kc said... you have to figure what the fascia is going to cover...if there is a soffit.. what will it be ? .. one detail we use is 2x4 subfascia.. furring.. and vinyl soffit (3/8 with 5/8 j-mold).. so a 1x6 works fine.. and it looks good on the rake also
*You can buy it pre-grooved in 1x6.But you can make a fascia whatever size you want. There are no rules.I once saw a roof edge built to a point.....wide soffit.....no fascia. Looked great. There are no rules.Ed.
*2x6 use (5/4x8)-2x8 use (5/4x10) 2x10 use (5/4x12)2x12 use a board stretcher.
*brian, that is the most simplified answer but not always right. designs can be planned and altered to fit the building. The fascia should look proportional in size to the building. In Johnie4s case it will likely be a 1x6 or 1x8. But if we followed your advice on a 12/12 pitch with 2x12 rafters, we might end up with a 16" fascia. I just built last week a 'flat' roof with 2x10 rafters that has a 7.5" fascia because I designed it that way to look good. Just notched the tails up. Planning is the key. I've seen fascias that look like they werre built by a monster 'cause they were so heavy in relation to the building.
