Mike Maines,
The software won’t allow me to address this post to you , says there is no member by this name !
Heres the end product of the lead you gave me about the railing and volutes a year or more ago .
Some friends did the rest of the woodwork , using most of the old ballusters .
the porch roof was done last Fall by me .
Really makes the front of this fine home , now thats it’s back in place .
Thanks again for the lead .

Walter, I know you are proud of the porch
and you have every right to be, that is very sweet.
but,
man, you could spend a couple hours shooting details on that place.

Cal ,
That is a sweet house built around 1914 I think .
I maintain the roofs and redid the porch one last Fall .
I took no part in the execution of the woodwork , except for lining up the top rail and the gentlemen who completed this job .
I thought today that I'd start a thread with an architectural detail of the day , and hope many others would snap pics of unique detailing to post .
I forgot the P and S the other day so didn't get any " on the way " shots .

Keep me $5 ahead of yellow crocs too please !!
So far the croc hasn't resurfaced. You just might pull this one off.
So, plan on visiting the slopes in Colorado this winter?A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Walter,That is some nice restoration work your friends did. Thanx for sharing. There is a house in Key West with a similar balustrade. The volute not only turns down but also out for the run then returns back in and up. If I can find a pic I will post it.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Chuck ,
Thank you , I would love to see some pics when you come across them .
Best , Walter
Walter,
That's some lovely work your friends did there.
Reminded me of a railing in DC that I see frequently. Hopefully Chuck will find the photos of the Key West house.
I like yours better, as the tops of the balusters there seem to meld in better with the volute bottom.
Best,
Steve

Very similar style, isn't it. Two things I don't like about yours ... maybe that's too strong a word ... how about 2 things that look better in Maine! The posts on yours are much closer together, so the top rail seems to jump up and down with a whole lot less of the long run in between. And the turned portion of the balusters on yours are all the same height, whereas Walters looks like it has 3-4 different heights."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Steve ,
Thats very graceful and appealing I think . Yes I hope Chuck does fing his pics too .
Looks like the roof on that house you showed is slate !
Hope the family is doing well , and you're not up at 3 every day !!
Best , Walter
Almost ready to get serious about bangorslate.com if you are still willing to help .
Walter,Well, I'd agree with the comment above, that yours is much more agreeable to the eye. I'll have to look and see if it's indeed slate on that house. Probably is, as that street is full of it.Of course I'd be willing to help! Figured I'd hear from you once the birds started heading for warmer climes. Not up at 3 too many days, but a few :) Everyone's well and Gabi is helping me type this.Hope things are dandy up your way.Best,

I saw that first photo of just the railing and I got chills. Then I saw the installed photos and just sighed.I love the look. I'm in the middle of framing my own front porch, a similar design but not as fancy. Adding a vestibule plus an overhead balcony to cover the first floor porch. I'm limited in some ways in size and scale, as the first floor of my house has 10' ceilings, so the balcony part is a little more vertical than I'd prefer. But I love the look of that porch. Sweet.
Mongo ,
The City of Bangor is proud to have some real nice architectural gems .
I'm extremely fortunate to be entrusted with helping keep them up .
Have fun with design and execution on your project . Take plenty of pictures to post here if you can .
Walter
Man, that is good looking. Real class.
It really dresses up the front of that house .
Thank you .
Nice!! The whole porch is nice!!

Thanks for looking in and the feedback .
Walter
Walter,
Thanks for the heads up-- looks great! I don't recall now if you had decided on using Azek or mahogany? Is this in Bangor? Really looks sharp. Alex is starting on some garage doors for us right now.
I think my handle here is "Mike_Maines", BTW.
Mike ,
Yes he did the rails in mahogany . The house is right in Bangor , quite close to the master of horror's abode .
I got the pics of the other roof .
