Replacing existing alum siding with vinyl. Not sure whether to use fanfold or other type. Read an article about fanfold might trap moisture. Fanfold R value only 1-1.5. Walls are straight and fanfold wouldnt take out any dips or bows. Still use fanfold anyway? Also, what goes on first tyvek or fanfold? Less expensive substitute for Tyvek? Thanks for any help.

There is no generic 2-ft. rule. Use the code tables to dial in joist spans and overhangs based on accurate engineering.

Are you removing the aluminum siding?? And if so, then what is under it?
The main purpose of fanfold is not insulation. It is to provide a flat surface for the vinyl to lay against when the vinyl is being installed on top of other siding.

Removing alum completely to plywood.
Then skip the fanfold. Whether housewrap makes sense depends on where you live.
(Don't forget to recycle the Al siding -- not a small amount of $$ there.)

Yes, skip the fanfold. But you should put something under the vinyl to act as a rainscreen. Vinyl siding does not keep water out, so you need something over the ply that will shed the water.Housewrap and #30 felt are the two most popular choices I would imagine.
