I’m building a home with exposed rafter tails and my contractor and I can’t agree on what to do with the fascia trim. I originally thought that on the gable end, we’d face the last rafter with 1×8 cedar, similarly tapered at the end. Then, we’d have a 1×2 piece of cedar on top of that supporting the drip edge. On the eave end, we’d simply use the 1×2 and leave the tails exposed.
My builder argues that we need a way to miter the corner, so he devised these scalloped brackets that taper to meet the 1×2 on the eave end. I think it looks clunky.
I’ve attached a few photos – can anyone make a suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

You're absolutely correct, it looks awful. Stick with your original idea and remind your builder who makes out the checks.

Post some more pictures of your house. It's looking pretty good. Also, post some pics of the solution you and your builder come to.
But only if you want.

Why not miter the corners where the fascia intercept?Joe Bartok
You're into a painting situation anyway...
Leave the tails as they are. Paint them. Hang copper gutters with the hangers on the tail's end. They'll tarnish to somewhat go with your windows. Or use AL gutters the same color as the windows.
Miter the edges? I say no one is going to look at the butt end of your rafter+cedar fascia fly rafter.
Skip the do-dad your builder suggests.
Is it me or in pic 2 is the ice and water shield run on top of the tyvek?
I see the same thing. My roofer knows that this is a pet peeve of mine. Shoot, it's not really even a pet peeve.... it's just poor practice. Anyway, he's always good about it, but sometimes he isn't on site and I have to watch his guys like a hawk. They're so good on so many other flashing details, that it blows my mind that they always try to sneak that detail past me. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I see that too, more than I'd like to.
FWIW, I like the fascia returns. If I understand it right, the rake board will come down at a full 7 1/4 (looks like 1x8 anyway) and tie in nicely to the 7 1/4" part of that tail fascia. I like it. I definitely like it better than looking at a 1x2 fascia board butting into a 1x8 rake board. Which, if I understand this correctly, is the alternative. I think it's a nice detail. But to be fair, I'd like to see a shot from a little further back, with one of the rake boards installed and tied in. I don't think we're all seeing the same thing without the rake boards actually installed yet.View Image
I dont know what your builder is trying to accomplish, but I wouldn't buy it.
To each his own.....
