Guys, I just finished building a deck and kitchen island on the deck. (with your help–thanks). This should be any easy one. I need to fasten a 10×13 foot umbrella to the deck next to the kitchen. The railings are trex and would never hold an umbrella that size in the wind. I was considering fastening a 24 inch piece of 2″ steel pipe onto one of the 2×10 deck joists with three u-bolts and sliding the umbrella down into the pipe. I thought this would be stronger than the deck mounted umbrella bases/plates that just screw down into the framing from above. The 2×10 is running in the same direction as the wind generally blows so it should not torque the joist to the side. I’ll box in the framing around the pipe to help prevent any twisting. Any input would be appreciated.

That's the general idea -- U-bolt to the joist and then insert blocking between adjacent joists. Though be sure to use an umbrella that will collapse itself rather than splinter if subjected to excessive wind.
