Fasteners for joining frameless cabinets

gquirk | Posted in General Discussion on June 8, 2007 12:00pm

I am installing some frameless cabinets in a kitchen project I am working on.  I want to install the cabinets joined together as a unit to simplify installation against the 100 year old, “about” squre walls.  I bought a set of PONY cabinet clamps for this purpose.

What kind of trim-head screw (length / size) would be best for this purpose?  McFeelys.com has way too many to choose from!

Thanks!

    Try these:

These are binding posts that I usually use to join frameless cabs. You just drill through the shelf bracket holes.

    qquirk,

I use "sex bolts" to join the carcasses together, usually drill though the holes where the shelf clips would go , 4 to a cabinet carcass.

We do sexbolts and try to hide most of them behind hinge plates.  Front edges only.

Our cabs have 3/4" of carcase side projecting past the backs, so we can go in there with #8 x 1-1/4 squaredrives, to suck the backs together.  The screws at the back are meant only to hold things together until we get screwing into the walls through the hanger cleats.

Thanks to all for the ideas. My cabinets are 3/4" plywood construction. Can anyone provide more info on "Piffen screws"? Google doesn't seem to know what they are or who makes them . . . is that possible??

I think they gave you the wrong spelling.  They're actually "Piffin" screws and you can find them here:

Stay tuned for more advice before you buy them!

What length of #8 trim head screw would be best for joining two 3/4" plywood cabinet side walls?1" or 1 1/4"? Also, any suggestions on where to pick some up? McFeely's doesn't seem to have #8 in these sizes, but does carry #7.

1-1/4" is what we use.  We get the black combo headed ones, take a square drive or phillips, from Woodworkers Hardware.  Less than buying from McFeeleys.

"Piffen screws."  We all know what they are.  Legendary performance.  The phrase alone has a nice cachet to it.

But ya gotta admit, "sexbolts" has a nice ring, too.

Unless of course our 5th grade English teacher makes us reexamine the noun-with-adjective phrase, "Piffen screws," so that we are now diagramming it as, "Piffen, screws."

Totally new look!  New look for Piffen, too!

BTW, whaddya think Paris Hilton did in the slammer to get released so soon?  Is there hope for Scooter Libby?

Paris Hilton sent back to jail

Steve Gorman, ReutersPublished: Friday, June 08, 2007

A Los Angeles judge on Friday ordered a weeping Paris Hilton back to jail to finish a sentence for probation violation, overturning a decision by the L.A. Sheriff's Department to have the celebrity heiress serve the sentence at home for medical reasons.

Wailing "Mom, Mom, it's not right," Ms. Hilton was taken away from the courtroom by sherriff's deputies after a hearing called by Los Angeles city prosecutors demanding that she be returned to jail to serve out the remainder of her sentence.

Hilton, 26, had been transferred from jail to house arrest on Thursday for unspecified medical reasons after serving only three days of her 23-day sentence.

She was given a jail term after being caught driving her Bentley without a valid licence, a violation of her probation for a prior drunken-driving offense.

Thursday's decision to let her serve the sentence at home because of a medical complaint caused national outrage and accusations of favorable treatment.

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton, arrives at the Metropolitan Branch Courthouse, in Los Angeles in this May 4, 2007, file photo. Ms. Hilton was freed from jail Thursday, three days after she began serving what was originally to be a 45-day sentence.

          GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP

Los Angeles city prosecutors filed papers late Thursday demanding that Ms. Hilton be returned to jail.

They also demanded the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, which runs the jail system, be held in contempt for releasing her early and violating the sentencing order, which expressly barred electronic monitoring of Hilton.

Ms. Hilton, a hotel heiress and star of the television show "The Simple Life," has become a symbol of America's fawning celebrity culture.

She had been expected to testify Friday by video conference from her lavish Hollywood Hills home, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer told sheriffs to bring her to court.

Citing privacy issues, officials have given no details of Ms. Hilton's medical problems but speculation has ranged from a looming nervous breakdown to a rash.

Ms. Hilton entered jail Sunday to serve a sentence -- originally seen by many as excessively harsh -- for violating her probation by driving on a license that had been suspended in an earlier reckless driving case.

Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, whose office prosecuted Ms. Hilton, said the sheriff's explanation for her house arrest was "puzzling," noting county jails are "well-equipped to deal with medical situations involving inmates."

Ms. Hilton's reassignment to house arrest infuriated national and local politicians, who reported receiving hundreds of angry e-mails.

Civil rights leader Al Sharpton said Thursday her release from jail gave the appearance "of economic and racial favoritism that is constantly cited by poor people and people of colour."

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich called Ms. Hilton a "spoiled brat, acting out to get her way instead of serving her time".

But civil liberties lawyer E. Christopher Murray said her jail term was "an example of a celebrity being treated more harshly than an average person."

Al Sharpton does more damage to Blacks as a people every time he opens his mouth than the KKK has done during the last 150 years.

As to that civil liberties lawyer, celebrities generally earn incredible amounts of money and prestige from society, and thus there is an ethically viable argument that they should have to pay society back at a higher rate than people who do not. I don't necessarily agree with that premise (it's the same one used to justify a graduated income tax system), but anyone who thinks 45 days in the slammer is excessive for drunk driving and breaking probation is completely out of touch with reality. The poor Miss Hilton is lucky I wasn't the judge who sentenced her; she'd be swabbing out toilets in Folsom Prison for a year if I had anything to say about it.

"Mom Mom, it's not right!!!" Oh bog I'm gonna puke....

That's only true in terms of the people that belive that Al actually speaks for black people.  Granted, there may be many, many people who think that Al has his finger on the pulse of the black population and granted, he may speak for SOME of them, but I am not one those people.  Al is just background noise in a much larger social problem.

But anyway yes, I agree with you.  He continuously reinforces the notion that the black population (latest euphemism is "people of color" which, I think,  is some kind of false attempt to include the Hispanic population) is special and distinct and not capable of being included in the larger society without the help of people like him.  Regardless of endemic prejudice, every minority group that made advances towards acceptance, has done so by working within the system, not by decrying its unfairness.

Now that Hilton went back to jail, I'd love to hear Sharpton say "never mind".

The KKK made Blacks into victims worthy of the protection of the rest of society, and one could make a good argument that without the persecution they perpetrated, it would have taken longer for non-black society to understand the true depth of the misery lived by their black brethren.

Sharpton OTOH paints 'his people' as selfish opportunists by acting like one himself. He is the antithesis of Black leaders like MLK, and a product of the 2-second sound-bite TV culture which has divided society into so many fighting fragments that some sociologists despair for the ultimate survival of the human race.

Actually, he does have talent--at getting his fat mouth and face on TV and in the papers.

And considering he has been doing this for 20-odd years and has yet to utter one single statement that was worth hearing (let alone worth repeating), that takes a real talent for bullshipping.

I've often heard Walter Williams call Sharpton a "poverty pimp."

What a great term for Shapton!   ;)

            Thomas Sowell writes:

Those who intercept the money intended for the poor have been aptly called "poverty pimps." The poor are a commodity to these people, who include not only local politicians, community activists and small-time hustlers, but also people with impressive titles and academic credentials, who likewise milk the larger society, in the name of the poor.

            ......

Let us celebrate the poor, Let us hawk them door to door. There's a market for their pain, Votes and glory and money to gain. Let us celebrate the poor. Their ills, their sins, their faulty diction Flavor our songs and spice our fiction. Their hopes and struggles and agonies Get us grants and consulting fees. Celebrate thugs and clowns, Give their ignorance all renown. Celebrate what holds them down, In our academic gowns. Let us celebrate the <!---->poor.<!---->
