I’m planning on building an 8′ deep porch with a shed roof in an area with a 100 psf snow load. The porch is going on a home that’s in construction, and the second floor hasn’t been framed yet. I’m a total amateur so I hope you’ll excuse what might be some dumb questions about how to do this:
We have to follow the 2015 IRC here, but I haven’t been able to find any information about how to fasten the roof ledger board to the house. Can I run lags through the ledger board and sheathing to the studs (which are 24″ O.C.)? If so, does anyone have any guidance on what size lags to use or how many I should use per stud?
I’m also wondering the best way to fasten the ledger board for the ceiling joists in the porch. Most of the porch sits in front of a 2-story wall that doesn’t have a rim joist. Can I fasten this ledger to the studs? Do I need to let in blocking on the exterior side of the studs before I sheath the second floor and then fasten the ledger to that?
