I need to fasten new vinyl siding to a concrete wall which has no nailers set into it. Any ideas out there for the best (easiest?) way to do so?

Don't.
*But if you really want to, use a few barn spikes, beat the hell out them with one of Bleu's six pound sledges, and when they bend over you can use them to hang some of that nifty pressure treated diagonal lattice.. . . complete the i look!!
*I agree with Mike, I wouldn't do this. But if there is a good reason why you want to hide a conrete wall with vinyl, you need to pad the wall out first with wood, and then cover with the vinyl. If furring out with 2x material is a problem, perhaps you could cover the wall with 5/8 or 3/4 plywood. Attach the wood by using either a powder actuated nail gun, or else use a hammer drill and "hit anchors" or even special concrete srews like Tapcon. Use exterior rated ply and also use construction adhesive along with the mechanical fasteners. Good luck.
*Dave ,furring will work pretty good here but you'll have to use smaller nails for the siding, like 1" unless you go to 2x for the furring. That costs more so think about it. And I'd power nail the strips up, tapcons work great but take longer.Vince

My neighbor put vinyl over his brick house instead of re-pointing. He had a pile of furring, spent about 3 days hammering them into the mortor joints with cut nails. Glued rigid insulation between them and then hung the vinyl. I thought he was crazy but the job looks great and has been up about 8 years now without any problems. Hope that helps you out some.
