FEEDBACK wanted – Bosch stud finder

toolbear | Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 9, 2007 07:45am

Bosch DMD4K Digital Multi-Detector Kit

Anyone have one of these?

Does it work?

Is it better than sliced bread?

I would love one that I could actually trust to some extent. My collection of Zircons always leave me wondering what I would find if I took my hammer and knocked a hole in the wall right there.

I think that IMERC has one.  Believe he likes it, but I'm not gonna speak for him.  Would also like to hear some feedback.  Ive been toying with the idea of getting a bosch for a couple months now.

out of all the dust collectors I have it seems to work the best....

it has it quirks but over all it beats all the others I've had...

            it is accurate...

I loved the one I had that was an earlier model. Very accurate on all kinds of stuff. DMO 10
The on/off/callibrate button disappeared somehow. I wonder if I sent it in....

I had to look this up to compare. Mine was the DM 10.
It worked fantastic for a few years until it quit working. Accurate readouts on what it was seeing and how deep in the wall or in concrete.
About the same porice too, as far as I recall.

        it got wet didn't it...

the 10 just didn't have the light ring IIRC....

Bosch has/had a fix for that some time back...

the new plastic incased circutry they repaired it with seem to make it work oh so much more gooder....

can't remember how it happened. When it quit, I had to have something right away, so I grabbed a Zircon off the shelf and been using it since, always wondering why they couldn't make it as good as the Bosch I had.
That one was originally made/marketed just for finding rebar in crete, so it should have been more rugged. I just dug it out and looked again. It was a "Made in China" deal. I'm thinking way back in the late ninties too!

Well I shelled out my $99 and bought the damn thing a few months ago.I can't figure out what the hell it's good for. What a pc of #### - I can be using it on a wall that's got drywall 4' up so I know exactly where the studs are and the stupid thing is wigging out all sorts of ways. What a totally dumb idea to put electrical sensing in it - I just want a decent stud finder. If I could find a Bosch rep, I'd stick it in his pocket and ask for my $99 + shipping back.Worst Bosch product I've ever used (or tried to use)Maybe I'm just not doing it right, huh? It's got all kinds of mombo jombo things you have to do to get it set up , turn it on, hold down this button till a light goes out, whatever... mine has never done anything useful since day one.I truly hope that mine is a dud - cause if this is how it's supposed to work than stay away.My screwup is waiting till after the 30 days return to figure out what a pc of junk it is - now I own it for good.Sound pissed off? I am, I payed $99 for a stud finder and it won't do the simplist of tasks.I keep thinking, maybe I just need to read the manual again and figure out what I'm doing wrong - is that what you want from a $99 stud finder?Anyone here have one that does as it says?Julian Tracy

Not sure what you are referring to as this particular dud is currently the only tool in my arsenal that doesn't seem to do what it is supposed with repeated trying.Don't get me wrong, I often fall back to thinking must be pilot error, but I'd like to see you find a stud with this sucker. So Let's see here - anyone at all have and use the latest model Bosch stud finder that's for sale now in the US to great results? Not some old model or modified thingy - the version they just released recently. Cause that's the one I have and it doesn't seem to work for ####.JT

I found this interesting tidbit on mine Case study
BoschDesigning and developing the DMO 10 digital metal detectorProfessional and DIY tool manufacturer Bosch wanted to expand its product range into electronic measurement tools, but lacked the resources to implement a digital metal detector within the required timescale. PA assisted with design and development, achieving a one year time scale from engineering model to start of production.and this is what it was -

I did have to pause at IWRC, but if we recall correctly is how I took it and agreed with it.Go back to read again my posts. mine is diff from the ones first mentioned here. A DMO 10 instead. I even linked to a photo of how it lookes.I did some searching and interesting enough, almost all of that model existing info and available used or just recently all sold out in clearance sales were all in the UK, Australia, and Japan! Looks like not many of them hit the streets here in the USA.I first saw it at a JLC live in Rhode Island. I can't recal for certain whether I bought it right then and there on the spot or ordered it later when i got home.Given the extreme discounts at shows, and the fact that they apparantly didn't spend long on the market, I'm guessing the former. If I get it fixed, you wanna borrow it to locate that toothbrush in your toilet?;)

It doesn't matter if my calculations are close. Marty had several. One for each. Flood, sell out, or burglary.

Anyway the reason I'm curious is because of conversations I've had with you about it. For some reason Bosch sold them only very briefly here in the US. And I have heard only good stuff about them from guys like you. Now that they are selling them again I'm hoping that they are the same ones. If so I'll buy one tommorrow.

I'll belooking for what IMERC has to say after trying the newest one, and likely to buy it. This thread is the first I knew of it coming back. Electronics is so far advanced in the past 8-10 years that I gotta think it is somewhat better.Just think - in another ten or twenty years, it will be combined with some sort of GPS and a micro scan recorded on PC that can find the titanium underwires in Splinties harness no matter where she is.

mine could find rebar up to something like 6" deep in concrete.
Live wires 2-3" deep in a wall behind heavy plaster.
Dead copper 2" deep in behind sheetrock.I was kidding tho about the toothbrush. It is less dense than the porcelain, but if you do drop a gold coin down there, I would not be surprised if it could locate it for you.

http://bosch.cpotools.com/other_tools_and_equipment/digital_measuring_-_detection/dmd4k_spec.htmlI have bought a few tools from CPO Bosch with no problems.
Somebody here - I think it was Eric Paulson had a problem getting timely delivery of a chop saw recently, but that it the only negative I have heard of them.I was about to pul the trigger oin this new one myself, but all the activity on this thread got me interested in my old one again, and hot diggity dog! I got her working again. It doesn't have quite all the bells and whistles that this new one does, but must not be too different in the guts either - now that I have seen the guts. That Zircon looks from the description like it will do the same basic job but without the lights and bells and whistles.

I'm looking for feedback on how EASY it is to use.I've heard a lot of complaints over the years like above about how these things do not work, but it is always a matter of time, patience and technique. The gadget works, but the operator fails to calibrate it or slow down and read it right. Not just some magic wand you wave at the wall and suddenly a girl in an elf costume whispering in your ear that she knows where the stud is

Went to my favorite tool store today to check out the stud finder. They are also the local Bosch dealer. It seemed pretty cool. The guy gave me a brief demo on it. He wasn't a good demonstrator but I got the gist of it. He did find brick ties in a brick wall for me. I thought that was kind of cool. They had them at $15.00 more then the online deals posted here. I just wasn't in the mood to pull the trigger today. But I will probably end up with one eventualy. They also had the Bosch laser measuring tool at $20.00 cheaper then the online version. I need to research that baby as it looks like it will be handy to have.

Home Desperate was supposed to have sold off the wholesale division which included White Krap a coupla of months ago.  Now its in the hands of the vulture capitalists. (At the last minute a surprising reduction in the purchase price of some 1.5 B.  Something about the credit crunch back in Oct. )  I would think either a bigger fish comes along and eats the whole thing again or it gets resold back to the original S. Cal owners for a third time.  Those guys already did an IPO of it back in the mid 90's, retook it private in the late 90's and then sold it again the HD.  I'm sure they could get some of their real esate buddies to help them buy it off the former HD Wholesale carcass.

But I haven't seen much of a change in the local yard.  Other than putting up locked fences to keep me out of checking inventory before going to the sales desk to have them tell me its not in stock, and them then saying they'll check anyway and then finding all kinds...

I bought one a few months ago.

As a stud finder, it's a little better than the Zircons, though it indicates studs before hitting the leading edge, and takes longer to drop out past the trailing edge as you drag it across the wall.

To be  honest, though, I would buy it again just based on the annoying electrical detector.  It senses live wires within the walls, though how deep I can't say for certain.  But whenever I drag it near a switch or receptical, the detector chirps away.  And knowing that there are live wires in a wall that someone is thinking about altering is nice.  (Someone wanted to shorten an apparent blank wall, but one wave of the Bosch and I discovered the wall to be a cable chase, confirmed by pulling up the attic floorboards above.)

I haven't used the metal detector much, other than to find drywall screws and nails, which it does well.

I'm glad I bought it, and would buy it again.  The electrical detector is on constantly, which can be annoying when searching for studs or metal in a wall with cable inside.

One word of caution; the On-Off switch is actually the third pushbutton on the right, and is prone to be pushed inadvertanly through the soft case Bosch provides.

    Hope this helps.

Does it turn self off automaticly after a certain time too?

It shuts off after approximately 5 minutes.

During the cold months I carry a bag to/from the van that contains batteries/glue/anything prone to freeze damage, and just because I haven't found a home for it yet (make that, carved out a volume big enough) I keep it in the bag as well.  Twice I've found it whining in the bag after having the on/off switch bumped.  And in the metal detector mode, there was enough metal in the batteries in the bag to set it off.  So now I keep it in the wood detector mode, which requires the Zoom button be depressed to activate the detector.

When there are live wires in the wall, and I'm looking for studs in the same vacinity, you can turn off the audible signal.  So the ring indicator will flash, telling you there are live wires, and then you watch the display screen that will indicate the presence of a sud (or metal, if you're in that mode.)

Thanks for the review and photo. We have enough interesting things in walls on the remodels that any sort of edge would help. My favorite was the broken J box hidden in a wall and foamed in place. Several circuits in it. Took some work getting the foam off to find the box. Few other code violations in that house. The ToolBear

So it actualy detects studs and metal seperatly? I didn't get that from the demo I had yesterday. I asked the guy about that and he rolled his eyes at me and said that it had to detect the nail to find the stud. I thought I asked a stupid question. Maybe I didn't.

The typical cheaper ones use a magnetic technology to locate metal or sense an electrical current. They cannot find a copper or AL wire with no electrons movingto create a field.I may be wrong, but I think mine older one was a sort of microwave or some other advanced technology that could detect based on density rather than just ferrous material. It could find things other than just metal. But I think that it was so sensitive in the metalmode that it picked up nail;s that the zircons would miss, making it easier to locate studs.I don't know the answer really, but I don't think it was a stupid question at all.

I'm begining to think it was a good question. When I get it all figured out, I might go back there and hold a class. Like I said earlier the guy didn't do a good demo at all. That tool store is great but you have to get the right guy or your wasting your time.

I have been thinking on something related to this today, and would really like to understand it more. That is the technology they are starting to use for scanning people at airports. Some is metal scanning and some is X-rays, but I think there is advanced stuff being worked in too that sees more better.Give us some time and we'll have a combo unit that we can set up to take a picture of the wall. It will combine thermal imaging, magnetics, and all that stuff to computer-generate a vision of what the wall looks like inside! We won't need to call the BIL superman with the X-ray eyes to come over and check it out anymore. And it will only cost a million or so!'course with inflation, that'll be chunk change by then.Besides, it'll be a good investment for finding cash stashed in walls.

I just went to school on metal detectors. It gets really deep.

Two different modes; one for studs, one for metal.  It will detect live wires or dead, the dead would be indicated as just metal.

To be honest, it locates studs as well as any other detector, but if the DW has pulled away from the stud somewhat, it might not find it.  In that case, I use the metal mode to find the fastener holding the DW to the stud.

Probably the thing that makes the tool nice, is that they have taken a good metal detector and current detector, and an average stud finder, and combined them into one convenient package.

I carry a small metal dector and ac current detector in my bucket, which this would replace, if I weren't so afraid that it wouldn't last for long riding with the hammer, chisels, and pliers.  (No pockets in the Bucket Boss big enough that are available.)

Thanks. So it does work like a sonar I guess.

The Bosch stud finder looks a lot like the Zircon and... functionally, it looks like the same tool. Bosch is not averse to re-branding. The US patent numbers on my Zircon are 561928, 5913714, 6023159 and D47166. Do those numbers match the numbers on your Bosch?

There are no patent numbers on the Bosch that I could find.  I have a number of Zircons, none of which can detect live cables within a wall, nor detect metal like the Bosch.

            Who owns Zircon, anyway?

            no comparison...
