Fein blades- We make our own to save $$
We love the Fein saw but hate the cost of replacement blades (about $35 each). When the blades are dull (read as no teeth left and blued from heat) we carefully grind the blade off of the mounting plate. Using a replacement blade for a japanese pull saw ( $14 at the local woodworking supply) we snap the blade into 1 1/2 inch sections and re-spot weld them onto the mounting plate. Two spot welds hold just fine. Our investment was about $140 for the spot welder plus some pull saw blades. We get about 10 “replacement blades” from one pull saw blade. I’m trying to find a supplier for a 1-1/2″ x .032 thick metal band saw blade so we can also make some metal cutting blades. Should get about 100 blades from that one 🙂

I think I saw that tip in the mag a while back. (Not that that makes it less useful- just a bit less original.)
Let us know about that 1 1/2" bandsaw blade, now that sounds interesting.

describe how you SNAP the blades.
It's done with laser vision. Not everyone is born that way...
I use a 24" metal brake and snap the blade every 1-1/2" , as if I was trying to bend the blade like a piece of sheet metal. Clamping the blade between two pieces of angle iron in a vise will do the same thing. The blades are brittle and will snap off at the clamping point.
thank you
What are you using for a welder?
