My wife and I will be installing a 3/4 inch oak strip floor in several rooms of our house. The sub floor is 3/4 plywood. On top of the plywood we will put a felt paper and then nail the floor strips. My question is according to a Taunton book on Hardwood Floors the paper should be stapled down. What kind (name & model/size staple) of stapler should I use? Do I have to staple the paper down. My concern is that I don’t want the floor strips to ride ontop of the staples. Is there a staple that will be countersunk when installed. Appreciate your advice.

Ken and Pat;
Start your row (of felt) at the far end of the room and do your overlap so your debris doesn't go under the felt (I use a small whisk broom as I go to brush debris away from under the advancing tongues. Don't worry about the staples as you are only tacking at the edges - to keep it down- remember to leave a 1/4 inch expansion space next to wall (covered by baseboard.) If any do fall under the flooring a good wack with a hammer will mush the staple into the subfloor. I also snap chalk lines on the felt to reflect the joist locations. Porta Nailer - $199.00 at Tool Crib - hammer activated. Just did a floor with flush mount register outlets - nice touch. Have fun - it will look great!

Staples not a big deal with my few installs either.
near the hammer stapler,
aj
*the thickness of the staples are probably nothing compared to the depth of the knots and height of the excess veneer i always find on pine subfloor. I doubt the staple is over 1/16" thick and will probably dimple a little into the felt. Knock down any staples that arent set good with a hammer and i bet you will never see any of them. I bet the joints in the plywood are father apart vertically than the depth of a staple. If not tell me where you get your decking....lol....
