How was that compass rose done?
It is just stain or is inlay?
bill its just cut... mostly freehand with a 4 1/2 tile saw thin $10 ebay diamond blade... total layout & cut time less than 30 min.... (and that the whole 20x20 room with i cut into aprox 30"sqs and a 10" border... i had 3 acid stains onhand... a black, dark brown & a tan... & mixtures of same... when i was finishing the concrete i stayed on it and got it very slick & hard where i didn't finish it as well i think it has alot more character..even the tennis shoe prints look good stained....
p
story for the pics... first ones are the finished 2nd floor concrete... then some of some 1st floor that i scored & stained (all concrete you see is now scored & stained) then the 3rd floor being installed (parts of the 2nd getting split into 2 floors) added 4500sf this way... yes those are 3.5" x 12" x 20ft clear south american pine glu lams. I had made and I imported from south america... they form the finished floor and the finished ceiling (below) they are supported only at the brick wall and on the 6" x8" steel beams you see in the pics... on the 6x8 beam i welded a 2" flange with 1/2" holes 3" on center and they are lag bolted down to the beam and to the brick wall support (4" angle thru bolted to the wall) they are then glued clamped and lag bolted to each other 6x... and 3/8" x 16" hardened steel pins are nailed thru each one in several other places... they span aprox 15ft and have a 5ft cant.... they more than pass an L360 live load test... u might notice the cherry picker i built to lift & place each lam... yep thats a $69 harbor frt 880lb winch... that lifted everyone of em... 3 guys alot of glue, lagbolts, pins, 20ft pipe clams, electric impacts, could drill, place, & secure about 500 to 800sf of these a day... not bad considering it's the ceiling, floor, framing, decking, ect all in one.... most of these are 15'6" x 20ft bedroom lofts with a balcony (3' x 7') that faces the mississippi river they have a bathroom and walkin closet the non brick wall end overlooks the kitchen (1/2 bath under the stairs) living area under the loft with a matching balcony 870sf total for each of this type unit they are 6 rear second floor units like this and one on the front... there are 3 units on the front more than 2x this size on the second floor... (project has 20 units total 19 rental & mine) one is for me and SWMBO mine is a little over 16000sf but thats another story ....
still try'n to resize some more detailed pics...

I had a few questions about the floors yes those are gluelams I had them made in south america (a full container) they are pine and for the most part smoother than a new hardwood unfinished floor install... plans as of now ... i think i'm going to distress them some then just poly floor finish... maybe no 2 the same...

Very cool.
How does one go about procuring that SA Pine 3x12?
Is it thru a local yard or some kind of wholesale distributer? Not that I am looking for any, just curious is all.

they are full 3.5" x 12" x 20 ft
on the wall side they are resting on angle iron thats been thru bolted to the brick wall (iron building stars on the outside... these were prepunched with 1/2 holes 3" on center so that the lams could be lag bolted from below... on the backside of the 6x8 steel beam i also welded a prepunched angle for the same purpose... they are also glued & secured/bolted & pinned to each other as each was set into place... I have a little experence importing from around the world... so i just searched out and posted requests for quotes for the lams needed... my bad luck is they were delayed by katrina (port of neworleans & then they ended up in Texas with their storm) the quality sans for a few issues was pretty darn good...
