I have been given solid advice by all of you . I am looking at certainteed fiber cement
random straight edge shingle panels , pre- stained . I was quoted a price of $ 883 per square . That is an ugly price !!!!!!
I had looked at hardie products but they use paint only and I was hoping to stain .
I had thought fiber cement products would be less costly than mother natures clear wood cedar shingle panels ?

Thanks for the help.
I have not used the shingles but over on JLC they were chattin' and several mentioned that the cost of the products was more, I think a decent amount, and that the labor was more (again I think quite a bit) than the lap siding. They were nice to a home owner, I think because she was a woman and was pleasant, who also got some high quotes. The consesus was the prices were justified based on the fc shingle cost and labor.
I don't have experience with certainteed, only the hardie shingles, and not pre stained/prepainted. That said, ~$800 a square for prestained shingle panels sounds about right.
A few more aspects that add to the cost is with the panel material there is more waste, and, as far as I know, they only sell even squares.
You can get the price down some if you get the individual shingles (if they come pre-stained) but then you have more labor costs. If you can find someplace that stocks what you want, they will likely be cheaper. Also, I'll bet the pre-finished aspect adds about 25% to the cost.
I think we all know that cedar shingles can last a long time, but I also think fiber cement will last a very long time. My sis owns a summer house that I believe was built maybe in the 40s, and the asbestos-cement shingles, the grandaddy of today's fiber cement, is holding up just fine. Please no lectures on asbestos - I'm fully aware.
BTW - what's the the price per square for real cedar shingles - pre-stained?
Cedar Valley pre-stained clear grade panels per square are around $350 retail. The same product in Canada will cost me $650 ?????
was the $ 883 per square you gave in Canadian or US dollars?
Also re >> Cedar Valley pre-stained clear grade panels per square <<, cedar shingles come in panels????? Obviously I don't know squat about wood shingles. We just almost never see them for sidewall applications around here.
At this time there is no enough of a difference between US and CA dollars to worry about . There are several companies making panelized shingle products, Shakertown , Cedar Valley are two of the larger manufacturers .
