Has anyone installed fiber cement siding over concrete block walls? The homeowner wants the walls furred out 3/4″ with rigid foam for R value and Hardie lap siding. Any suggestions on nailing? Masonry nails through the foam and into the block was the suggestion of my supplier. Nailing into the furring alone won’t give me the depth of penetration required for the weight of the siding. Is there a pneumatic tool that will work with the block walls, or should I just do it by hand? This will probably be the only time I install this product over block, so it will be hard to justify a new tool.
Thanks

Fiber cement on block wall
I am doing a simular job. I do not plan to use furring strips. I want to install the insulation sheathing and then place the 4x9 panel on it and secrue the panel with a nail gun. I do not know what type of nail gun to use. The house is around 50 yrs old and cinder block. I did one side of the house using furring strips(with tapcons), osb sheathing and tyvek and nailed the Hardie panel to the strips. One the back of the house and the other side, they want insulation and panels. I have read about some people using a roofing nailer with small nail heads and going into the cinder block. I do not know what the best method would be and would like some advice.
Thanks,
Ralph
"Cinder block" is all over
"Cinder block" is all over the map in terms of how it will accept nails. Before you commit to one scheme or the other you need to try a few nails and see how it works out.
