Fred,
Don't know about SoCal, but I looked at some on the roofs of a fairly new condo complex in Bellevue, WA. Noticed that chunks were coming off corners and edges. I suspected that moisture was getting into it and the freeze-thaw cycle was doing it's magic.
Made me wonder. I reroofed with 3 tab after the shingle (just loath shingle roofs) died.
In SoCal you are doubtless interested in fire protection.

*Thanks-I too suspect that this fiber/cement will absorb moisture. I would re roof w 3tab if my neighborhood assoc would let me. For some reason, hardly anyone uses 3 tab in so. CA- the roofing industry here is in collusion I suspect.
*Might avoid the freeze cycle in SoCal. Depending where you are.Can you use Spanish tile? See a lot of that round here (Newport Beach, etc.)JLC had an article on roofing with it. Heavy. I believe you have to beef up the rafters, etc. to support it. I do see a lot of tile and stucco.jwells

One small experience: On a roof here in Western Washington, the owner of an expensive home (half a mill) re roofed a few years ago with the stuff, and it's doing the flaking, missing corner thing. We tried to obtain some replacement material only to learn it is no longer being offered by the manufacturer. So there you go.
*The apparent trouble with that product (CemTile and its relatives) would explain why I haven't seen it at the home shows lately here in Boise, Id. We opted for a cement tile product from Monier. A bit heavier than the CemTile at about 1000 lbs per square foot. Not as easy to install as asphalt shingles, but not as difficult as Spanish barrel tile. It comes in different styles, like slate, or ribbed to look like shakes as well as different colors. This is my first winter with it, so I don't have any long term results, although there is a lot of it being installed around the valley.
*Major brain infarction, the Monier cement tile is a 1000 lbs per square (100 sq ft) or 10 psf. I can imagine roof decking made out of solid unobtainium to support 1000 psf. Now where's that darn edit button?

I knew what you meant-thanks Gordon. I've looked at the Monier product and think it'll work fine.Fred
