I was looking through my driver sets today – screw tips, nut drivers, etc. Part of that set (and another) is a grey plastic piece labeled “Finder”. It look kind like a bushing with a spring inside it. Not designed to chuck into a drill. Open on both ends. What the heck does it do?

Possibly it slides onto a screwdriver bit to center the head of a screw onto the bit.
Slide it over a screwdriver tip and use it to keep the tip centered on the screw?
happy?
It's for when you drop a regular bit and can't see where it rolled off to. Drop the "finder" from the same spot and watch carefully where it goes. When you locate the "finder" you'll locate the bit :-)

Didn't work when I tried it. Maybe I need to get another finder to seek the other two.
You've got it upside down it's actually a rednif.

Darn youngsters. Don't you guys remember these things that came with every driver set? Only place I've seen that type in recent days is in B&D driver sets. Does bring back memories of working in my dad's shop back in the early 70's. Yes, stick the bit through the center of the thing and it helps to center the screw for driving/removal single handed.
Here is the "modern" equivalent:

I have an old Craftsman screwdriver bit set that I bought in the late 70's - early 80's which included these. They were gray plastic with a spring steel insert, but I don't recall mine coming with a "finder" label. There were useful with slotted screws, which were far more prevalent back then.
