I want to put in some stair handrail, the very common “colonial” pattern, 2-1/4″ wide x 2-3/8″ high in section, oak. Seen everywhere. But I cannot find anyone to sell it in solid, non-fingerjointed, wood.
Do you guys all think that those fingerjoints are OK in your finished work? I don’t.
Can someone direct me to a source?

I used to buy it fingerjointed, but with the top layer solid the length of the piece. I'm not sure who made it though. LJ Smith? Coffman?
We can buy it either way here at the local Menard's in pine or red oak. Their source? I don't know.
And no, I also wouldn't care to use the FG stock anywhere where appearance is critical.
Unfortunately, long, straight, clear, stable, pieces of Oak (or any wood) are quickly becoming things of the past.
If you find a good source let us know.

I found some. Don't know the price, yet. Arcways, in Neenah, WI (an FH advertiser for years) mills it themselves. I will see the quote Monday. I have a feeling the stairparts guys mill it, too, but the wholesalers my yards deal with don't stock it. I am talking about Saginaw Lumber and Brosco. I have gotten fed up over the years with the distributors that carry product lines, but don't stock the premium parts of those lines, then say no when asked to order it.
