I have a project where I need to attach 3/8 inch sheets of plywood to the ceiling (faux T&G plywood) and I’m wonding if it’s appropriate to use my finish air nailer for the job? I have a PC FN250a that uses 16 gauge nails – my thought is to use construction adhesive as well as the nails; any thoughts? Thanks; Lance

Hi, Lance-
In my opinion the adhesive is overkill for the ceiling. And I don't like to rely on finish nails for this application. My own preference is to use 1/4" crown staples- for the 3/8" ply I would use 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" long staples. Set them with the staple width running parallel with the grain- they will countersink very cleanly without blowing out the top veneer layer.

Ken - Thanks for your help (sounds like a good excuse to buy a stapler!)
I dont think the adhesive is a bad idea, but I agree that the finish nailer aint yer best bet.
If your talking about a porch ceiling, outdoor fluctuations in humidity will wreak havoc. Along with the adhesive I might recomend using a siding nailer.

Adhesive with sheet/ply goods is never a bad idea! While a stapler may hold a bit better.....the mechanical fastners are just there to hold till the adhesive sets.
While staplers may hold a bit better.......I'm guessing your 16g nailer would work just fine...as long as the depth is set right and checked often. I know my 15g nailer does just fine. Jeff She's exotic ,but not foreign, like an old Cadillac......she's a knockout!
Lance,
I agree with jaybird. When reading your post my first thought was to use a siding nailer. If you don't have one, get one on ebay for $200. After i did my siding, I found hundreds of uses for a siding nailer.

Thanks for the heads up; however, I did buy a Stanley Bostitch stapler (SB 150 sx) and it did the job for me. I decided to use construction adhesive as an extra measure to ensure a quality job and no call backs. Also, the advice regarding "stapling with the grain" really helped a lot; I shot one against the grain and created quite a blemish...
