I am having a new home built that will have knotty pine for the exterior soffits.
I am considering Penofin Red Label, clear finish, for it’s natural look and UV protection. Is this a good choice for a house in Maine (~ 7 miles from the ocean)? Are there better choices?
Here’s a picture of soffit previously done by my builder with a spar varnish. This house is located very near the ocean.

That is not naughty pine in the photo. It is #2 and better typical V-groove T&G pine.
Knotty Pine is full of knots and knot voids and I believe is harvested from a different species of pine than the whiote pine in that photo.
Anyway, Penofin is a pretty good finish. Check to see if you can get it with fungicides mixed in. Mildew will otherwise want to blacken your soffit over time.
i'm out on islesboro in Penobscot bay. where you?

Thanks for clarification on knotty pine. My builder has been referring to this product as 'V-match pine' and I've been thinking of it as knotty pine. Oh well...
The Penofin Red Label says that it has an added mildewcide. Hopefully this is enough to inhibit mold growth. Thanks for the caution about mildew taking over and blackening the pine.
Are there any other products that you might recommend in place of Penofin?
The new house is in Gorham, but I currently live beside the ocean in South Portland.
I like the look of that soffit. How thick is the material. I'm looking for a similiar detail but 1/4"thick or less. Any ideas. Will be attached to the underside of SIP's so a thinner material should work well.Tom

I'm thinking the bigboxes have plastic wrapped packages of 6 8ft lengths at something like 5/32nds thickness if I recall correctly. Some companies disperse the 6packs of 8's inside with 6, 4, and 2ft lengths.
But that thin in a moistured location there would be a great risk of warping and wreck the look.

That is 3/4" thick. GP has a T&G panel that is about 1/4, but it is an interior product. Might work if glued and prefinished. For exterior painted, or white unpainted Azek has a T&G beaded one side and v-goove back that is about 9/16 or maybe 7/16". Can't remember today.

it's hard to find a better oil. Siekens is a very good one, but their application instructions are almost impossible to follow for exterior use in this climate. You might be able to use tho, since you would be better off oiling the wood before putting it up.
