I’ve got a bunch of 1×4 T&G rough-sawn cedar to install as the liner on the vaulted ceilings of my house. Directions say to use 4d 1 1/2 finish nails toe nailed 45 deg angle into tongues. Fine, so I purchased a 15 gauge angled finish nailer since I thought it would be easier to use on the angled ceilings, etc.
However, those 15 gauge nails are quite large and I’m having a very hard time placing them on the tongue so that they aren’t obvisouly visible through the v-notch between boards. You can see the shiny nail heads quite clearly.
Would it be OK to use 18 gauge brads instead? I noticed the builder installed same material in outside soffits using brads and not finish nails.
How about the rest of the finish trim around windows, etc? It is also clear Western red cedar. Can I take the finish nailer back and use brads for that too? Or with such a soft wood is using brads just asking for trouble?
Thanks in advance.

I would use a longer brad. 1 1/2" through 3/4 at a 45 aint much holding it.
*I've hung t+g, beadboard, peg board, and trim w/ 21/2" 18 guage porter cable and none of them have moved an inch. Bigger is not always better. Nails go in easy and it won't split the tongue. Ever heard to 8's beat a 16. If you are worried use a few xtra nails. Although 5 21/2" nails will hold an 8ft. t+g solid.
*Use a hardwood flooring nailer! Works like a charm and keeps the boards in rack.Perry Wright
