We are starting the process of finishing the basement in our 1914 Sears Kit House.
The staircase down to the basement is butted right up against one of the house foundation walls and, with an eye on the budget, we are not considering moving those stairs. The stairs are narrow enough as it is so framing out that wall (as we plan on doing the rest of the basement) seems to be out of the question. Is there anyway to inslulate this wall and then skim coat the thing to make it look like the rest of the room without adding much dimension to that wall?

My house (I didnt build it) actually has drywall glued right to the foundation in the stairwell, has been no problem, foundation has always been dry but I WOULD NOT recommend it.
About the thinnest method I would suggest would be 1"eps foam, then tapcon screws through 1x furring, then drywall over that, would end up 2 1/4". If that is too thick, you could skimp and use 1/2" eps
Check out INSULPINK. It's XPS with channels in it for furring strips.
