Just finished this job…..all trim/moulding was custom and it was the first job with my new Bosch 4000 table saw. Finished with Golden Oak stain and many coats of clear shellac. BTW, I did not want to take out the newel post after the new carpet had gone in,…so I boxed in the existing post. It was an ancient square set-up.

Good looking work. Did you do the raised panels with a router or shaper? How does shellac hold up on floors?

From what I'm seeing in the pics, it looks like the "raised panels" are simply applied moldings.
You are correct. I had to enlarge the pic to see that. Chuck S.live, work, build, ...better with wood
Nice work...

Thanks, Stan. That means a LOT coming from the resident stair-master! ...Now if I just figure out how to get those ultra-lights going....since I'm 6'6", and , well BIG, I might need something larger!...Anyway, it was fun.
BTW, Just finishing up a staingrade open skirt staircase. Done many closed in straight runs...first time for an open skirt. So far so good."The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a governmental program" -Ronald Reagan
How much of the molding did you make yourself using the shaper? That's something I haven't got into yet, but it seems very interesting.
Be sure to post some images of the open skirt staircase you mentioned!
I actually used my router table and shaper, depending upon what the set-up was at the time. I had some kiln-dried oak laying around and I couldn't find stock moulding that I liked. Also, I had to match client's existing door casing which is a 4-flute flat oak stock no longer available at Home Depo. I enjoyed the challenge and client loved the work. Makes for a good combo."The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a governmental program" -Ronald Reagan
good eyes. Did the mouldings on the shaper, did not have exact measurements, so I went with applied mouldings."The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a governmental program" -Ronald Reagan
sorry about that....shellac was only applied to trim and panels, etc. Floor was done in polyurethane....done before I got there!! Thank heavens."The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a governmental program" -Ronald Reagan
thanks for showing that,
the newel post----and its' color are VERY similar to the one in the house I grew up in.
Our bannister was much longer though( and presumeably shakier after 6 of us kids slid down it for 20 years LOL)
Very pretty job.
