I was chatting with Boss last weekend, griping about the bathroom that has taken about six times longer than it should. He asked for pictures and I told him this week. Well, it’s Friday and I’ve gotten it done mostly except for towel bars, tp holder and the missing handles on the vanity. So I thought I’d try posting. I resized pictures with the microsoft product so I have no idea how they will come out. (Some wouldn’t come out.)
It’s deceptively easy looking. But, it was not an easy in and out. Demo was a witch; the old tile was a mud job on wire that wouldn’t give up. The old vanity was removed and replaced with a door to the adjoining bedroom. The bowl was moved and replaced. The washing machine was removed to another part of the house and a new vanity put there. The drop ceiling in the shower was lifted for more headroom, all the plumbing (including the vent lines) got changed, except for one drain line. The tile in the back of the tub is a different color, floor tile has a slight pattern (that does run under the vanity). Doors are six panel pine, shellaced at least for now.
Next up is finishing the paint and trim in the kitchen.

Okay, so I'm talking to myself. Nothing new there.
I see the pictures are too small. So much for the features of Microsoft.
Edit - I was able to resize at least one, down further at post 11. Going to keep trying.

Irfanview is a good way to go...
75 - 100KB is good too....

IMERC - I just went back to see the originals and see what happened. Apparently when I "compressed" them using the MSPicture Manager, I lost the original photos -size wise. I downloaded the irfanview and will try to work with it in the future. Not happy right now about losing the original (before) photos since they weren't saved anywhere else. I thought MS was saving them under a different name automatically when it was compressing them.
Just tried to get another attachment and no go. Maybe later.

Nice pics, even if they're small...you can try blowing them back up with Irfanview, although they will probably end up grainy. It's worth a shot.
Stuart - I "jist" got home from a 3 hour dinner. No way I'm messing with these things any more tonight. Before I left I tried blowing them back up - grainy isn't the word. I'll at least do the afters right - tomorrow.

I don't know about that program and I don't use windows much. But GOOD software will either safe the orginal with maybe a .BAK extension (or similar). Or the orignal might be in the trash can (or whatever windows saves "deleted" files).
Bill- somebody once called me a button pusher. I'm no computer lover. I tried going back into the MS program and blowing the pics up again, but they were really bad. I tried the "recycle bin", where "trash' is stored, and that was equally worthless.
Tomorrow, if nothing else, I will post the after pics in a size that is capable of being seen.

Throne room...lol. I thought it was the reading room. Looks real nice what I can see of it...You might wanna check out Picasa2 as well as Irfanview...Picasa2 is a real nice free site as well. Downloads in two seconds and organizes every pic in your puter without even asking it to...kinda scary actually.
I'll check back to see if you've enlarged these...in the meanwhile have a good sitting

Now I tried a different resize and let's see if it works.
Try two more.
I was able to save one of the original before photos and I think I resized it properly. We'll see.
Much easier to deal with those photos.
Looking good. It looks like the original had a pretty good wall tile job also.
So start to finish what kind of time are we looking at?
CW -
It's pretty near impossible to tell the time spent on it. I know we started some of the demo back in January, cause I was trying to get ahead of the crap removal - putting the broken tile and mud out for local trash collection. (Containers here are costing $550-650 and UP.) That was done slowly over an extended period - probably two or three weeks alone. The fun part of that one was stripping the mud and tile overhead from the ceiling in the old shower. I can say I had nothing to do with it, except some cleanup.<G>
On the calendar, it was eight weeks (Febr. and March). It wasn't really eight weeks steady work. I also demoed and reframed some of the upstairs around the same time, tiled, grouted and trimmed a small hallway floor and closet (40-50 square feet) outside the bathroom, hung some doors elsewhere, did a few days work in the kitchen, finished some trim and whatnot in the dining room and gave my helper too many days off. Even took 4 days to go to the house in VA. To be honest, I also personally worked a lot on other "business" items where I wasn't wearing overalls. I would say in man days for one (slow) guy probably three weeks or a little longer including the paint, wallpaper, etc.
I'm happy with the result. Everything's solid and well put together and looks pretty straight. Floors and shower are on cement board, all set in thin set. Doors are six panel pine. Walls are still partly plaster, partly rock. Trim is 3.25" but I bought primed because it was the only thing I could get. In the hallway I used 6 inch 3 piece base too. (That's not painted yet.)
As far as the pictures, learning how to do them was one of the reasons that I posted the thread. Sorry for the original little ones. I think I have a better idea now for the future. I worked with irfanview, Microsoft Phgoto Manager and Picasa just to get these done.

Looks great! What kind of doors did you use?
Doors are 6 panel pine. One was from the dreaded Home Depot. The other I bought the blank from the lumber yard and hung it. The jambs on the prehungs don't work out well on this job because of the sizes of the old lumber (the house is 125 years old) and the plaster walls. I've also had a couple of them blow apart, and if you need to cut them down at all, you go through the veneer. Better to get real wood, solid doors and just cut the jambs from scratch. Cost for a 36" PH is about $156, for a 32" blank was $152, plus hinges, jambs and assembly.
The finish is just two coats of amber shellac, lightly sanded between coats. It's fairly close to the color of the cabinets in the kitchen on the other side of the hallway. I also thought that the shellac would make a good base in case anyone decided to paint them then strip the paint later. I've been there and done that.

shellac. OK, no problem with a blotchy stain finish then. Nice.
Dang, it almost looks like ya know what you're doing.(-:
I've been doing a lot of abstract painting lately, extremely abstract. No brush, no paint, no canvas, I just think about it.
