We’ve put Ipe on a screened porch and would like a gloss finish, but no exterior urethane says it good on floors. Does anyone have product recommendations? Ever tried Waterlox Tung oil?
Thanks.

The most common way to make your own parging mix is to use either Type S mortar for block or Type N for brick and add a concrete bonding additive.

margc,
Welcome to Breaktime! If you click on Update Profile near the upper right-middle of the screen it will help. Often solutions are regional. For example, lots of folks here rave about Waterlox, but I live in a state where it is only available in quarts at absurd prices because it's high in VOC's.
I just finished my Machiche deck (very similar to Ipe) in Cabot's Austrailian Timber Oil. I would not recommend it! 4 months and it already needs to be refinished.
Good luck!
Wayne
edited to add: Scroll to the bottom of the discussions list for the search function - there is a lot on finishing Ipe

Thanks Wayne - I wasn't using the search function correctly last night, but found the articles this morning. I couldn't find anything on the profile to add state or region. Obviously new to the forum - I'll figure it out. I'm in North Carolina.
The best and only article on Ipe decking that I've found, from insallation to finishing, is in Coastal Contractor Magazine. Go to http://www.jlconline.com and you can get the link from there. It's in the current issue.

Just a note - that article in Coastal Contractor is not in the now-current issue (March), but the January issue.

Thanks for the article info. It looks like Waterlox is a recommended product.
There are a couple of others you could look into. Sikkens has a recipe for using one of their finishes that involves wiping the decking with acetone first. Penofin has a 'tropical hardwood oil' for ipe. Stores that sell either product will have the info.
Be aware that ipe has the reputation for being very oily and failing to absorb finishes. Many people have posted stories about finishing their Ipe decks and having problems shortly thereafter.
