Did you put drainage or fresh air inlet venting in the area under the firepit? It looks like it is elevated.Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that?
It's below ground. I have a lid that fits in the lip around the perimeter so when it's not in use it's level patio space with nothing to trip over. It's filled with 5' (deep) of semi large river stones that allow it to drain. There are vents that run below and allow air to vent up through the stones. This link shows it being made:
