Greetings;
Me again.. We’re still building… I have selected a rumford firebox design for my realMasonry fireplace and now need some help on the design of the structure/chimney… It sure seems like this has already been done (like the Rumford box design) and I should be able to just go get it…
Thanks and Gid bless- Sluggo1

your are correct it has been done, so often that they make everything you need. Back issues of fine home building show a rumsford fireplace kit, (I just lent my copy to the in-law so it'll be a while before it's back)
the very critical element is the throat.. design it wrong and you have a dangerous smokey hunk of masonary. what the kit does is provide you with the correct shape so that a proper venturi is created and the smoke will smoothly go up the chimney, radiating more heat into the room
there is a very critical length, depth, height, formula to follow as well..

This site will tell you everything you need to know, and direct you to masons who build rumford designs.
Also, look for "The Forgotten Art of Building a Good Fireplace", printed by Yankee magazine years ago. I believe it's now out of print so you'll have to do a bit of searching. Library, maybe? Inter library loan? This book has all the measurements, angles, etc.
Rumford fireboxes are great. There's nothing I like better than seeing and feeling a fire in a fireplace that I've built. A real sense of satisfaction.

PS Check out the cover of Dec 2003 "house beautiful" magazine. That's one of mine.
