Home owner wants to sheet over a brick interior wall that has a fireplace on one side. What is the set back for combustable materials from the F/P opening. Is 5/8s drywall over 2by ok, or do I need non com 2by as well. Will ripping non com 2bys lower it’s fire rating?

i'm not sure I understand halfof what you are attempting - probably done by now, but
Do you mean sheeetrocking over the side opposite the firebox opennning on the back side of the fireplace - looking for clearance, or do you mean making a finish wall face up to the openning on the fireplace side and looking for setbacks?

Yes a finished wall face up to the opening on the fireplace side and looking for setbacks. This build out will also house TV and speakers. My concern is the set back from the fireplace opening to any combustibles
Also what kind of anchors have you had the best results with in motor joints? ( Or mortor joints if you prefer)
Thanks Chardo

Some locales the setback from openning is 6" sides, others it is 8" sides. Everywhere it is 12" above, as far as I know.I genrally use tapcons to connect to masonry ( mortar) but you cannot direct connect combustables to the masonry of a fireplace. You need 2" air space separation. Sometimes metal studs helps. If owner just wants modern smooth faced wall to opeening with no mantle or surrond then you can plaster the brick smooth

6" to the side, 12' to the top, and generally from those points out any projection must fall with a 45 deg. plane out and away from the fireplace opening.
Not quite sure what your particular situation is.
But the last time i had to deal with set back from the firebox.
It was 6 inches from the sides and 12 inches from the top.
Good luck with it.
