I need a budget number to see if this is evan possible before I waste someones time getting estimates that may never happen.
I’m in process of building a new timberframe on some of the old foundation. one solution for a problem I ran into was to simple add a step from the new addition to the old foundation. that solved all of my problems….except I forgot to figure in my fireplace. While the firebox is three inches above the floor I came up 7 inches.
the simple solution would be to add a piece of 4 inch thick granite to the bottom of the firebox and now the firebox would be level with the rest of the floor. A more elegant solution would be to replace the fireplace. While it has a very nice stone surround (with some wonderfull unique pieces in it) it actually would be in the wrong place in the new home and the chimminey needs some repairs as it is. (plus the firebrick needs replacement).
OK I’m certain that the repairs and upgrades would be a lot less than total replacement i have no idea if it’s possible to consider replacement.
What would it typically cost to build a fireplace? (real wood burning masonry one) Mine is a little over 6 feet wide by 5 feet high with a firebox thats 36 inches by 30 inches. (not that those are important but I guess I’m not thinking of a giant walk-in.)

Depending on the area of the country you are in, you can expect the cost of a new firebox and chimney stack to come in around 5-7k. There are alot of variables here with design and materials as well as site conditions, but perhaps this is food for thought.
Thank you,
That's wonderfull that someone could plug in budget numers that simply. Now I'll check the construction budget(?) and see ifI should bother a pro.
Actually, the conversation will be with SWMBO, "well wadda think? I don't know wadda you think? well we should but it's so much!" Everything worth while is expensive so wadda think?........"
Depends a little on the height of the chimnney too.
Seven grand is a low number in my neck of the woods. Can be done but not anyu tricks, bells or whistles.
Had a basic one put in last winter which had support to basement, firebox, and two story chimney for $15,000. Oh yeak it had two flues (included the furnace in one) and corbelled over about ten inches from center.
Three years back we had one that was custom stone facing and hearth, larger firebox, corbelled over about two feet, and went four storeys high for 27KExcellence is its own reward!
Piffin-
My numbers are right with yours. Of course a really nice job is twice that if we can get the guy to do it.
