question: I am converting three fireplaces from wood burning to Gas. Heat
is not an issue and we want it as realistic as possible and as automated as
possible.
1) What are the top names in the gas log business?
2) Which give the most realistic look?
3) Are there differences in the valves and burners?
4) How are remote sets different than manual?
Please help
Thank you

If you're looking for realism, you want a vented
gas log. Some of the better looking ones are
Rasmussen and Peterson. There is a lot of
difference in valves. If you want a remote or wall
switch, you will be looking at a millivolt
control. Peterson offers a nice log with the valve
concealed underneath the burner. Rasmussen uses an
ITT valve that may be located up to three feet
from the log, but it is really big and must be
shielded from heat if it is placed inside the
firebox. Millivolt valves can be hooked up to
generic remotes such as Sky Tech (very nice). They
may also be switched back and forth between wall
switch and remote. No electricity is required,
just a few batteries. Make sure you check out all
your measurements and clearances before you buy a log set
