I have a repair to do in a fireplace at the fire box. Is there a certain mortar that needs to be used?

Yes. I have alway called it Refractory Cement, but there may be a more common name. It's in every hardware store.
Fire Clay is what it's called here. It's added to the mortar and typically has to be purchased at a brick yard.

Not to clear on what your repairs are but, the big box stores
carry premixed refractory cement now.
It comes in a quart container and costs something like $12.00
For a small fix it would work well, for anything substantial I'd
buy a bag of dry-mix. For that you'd need to go a supply yard.
Thanks people.
Hurry to the store as fast as you can. This time of year they'll be replacing it on the shelf with grass seed and fertilizer.
