I have never seen this discussed here before, but i have only been here for a couple of years.
What is the first thing out of your truck/van in the morning?
For me it is:
put on my bags
grab level and square with one hand
prints and radio with the other
I ask because I have guys that try to get their bags out last, or don’t unload anythign untill it is actually needed.
I would also like to know your opinions on tool belts. We are primarily a framing company. My rule is, If you area carpenter, look like one. Wear your belt unless it is lunch or break time. If you take it off at break you better be ready when I am to return, since I leave mine on unless it is lunch or Johnny time.

Unfortunately, it's the phone. Then on a remodel, it's drop clothes. After that you're not far off. Drill box, toolbelt, level, and glue box are usually my first trip. I don't use a radio, unless I'm on new construction site alone.
Been awhile since I did a remodel. I always have my phone, but no one else needs to carry oen on the job. (they are mine for 8 hours, wives have my number for emergencies)
I think this could get interestingAn inch to short. That's the story of my life !

To those who know - this may be obvious. To those who don't - I hope I've helped.

What are "prints"? ;-) (When I did framing, the prints were usually under a pile of garbage somewhere in the boss's truck or one time I found them in a puddle of water in the bottom of the hole. We'd build something and the next day the boss would come and tell us to move it or tear it out, he'd looked at the prints when he got home....)
Guess I would rather just do it right the first time. But I have on occasion found mine in a hole, or some other weird place. An inch to short. That's the story of my life !

Don't ya love it when the prints blow off the second deck and you spend 10 minutes looking for them before it dawns on you what happened? Speaking from experience of course.
I hop out of the truck, throw my bags on, and grab the prints from behind the seat. Then I open up the trailer and grab the electrical gang box on a 100' cord and run it out to a central location. At least that's how I start my day anyway.
<Don't ya love it when the prints blow off the second deck and you spend 10 minutes looking for them before it dawns on you what happened?>Or forgeting them overnight, now they're wet.
If it were easy....a caveman could do it.
Or under 2' of snow. BTDT.
Your bags should already be on before you get out of the truck, you should have memorized the prints the night before and you should have the nailgun in one hand and a 2X in the other. You take your bags off in the john? Your wasting time, that's what old rockmud buckets are for. Break? Swig some water and get back to it. And don't you dare talk to your preschool kids at lunch you lazy bastard, they'll be there when you get home.
We get to the job a good fifteen before start, we drink coffee, smoke cigs if we choose and shoot the sh$t. We ask how each others' night was, what new crap we have to deal with and wonder how that guy who steps out of his truck with a nailgun, bags on, and that "guideline" print can walk with that level being where it is.
On a normal day, I pull my bags, my drill, circular saw and drill bits. After that, we unload the bossman's truck which usually sees us unloading chopsaw, table saw, compressor, hose, guns, sawzall, and anything else we might need.
