Looking toward the near future, were supposed to install a large amount of azek beadboard on a porch ceiling. My biggest question is fastening. I read the instructions which are pretty vague (as in I don’t see where they tell you how to install it or what to use). I read at JLC what you cant do (they’re pretty good at that) they talk about splitting with a 15 ga. nail and even a 16ga nail. I haven’t really found much info floating around.
What am I supposed to do? I need real world experience, how do you fasten, how do you deal with butt joints? I was thinking of a divider strip that I would make to divide the ceiling up eliminating butt joints. Add whatever other wisdom seen fit.
It goes on the lower unfinished ceiling I know it not a good shot, its the only thing I had as I wasnt really taking a picture of that ceiling, I was hoping it would give a rough idea.

This post is in memory of Rez.
This is going to be half-bump, half-toss out some ideas.
Are you using the beadboard sheets? Or the individual planks? If you are thinking of the planks, you might also look at Versatex. They've got a stealth tongue that allows you to hide the fasteners.

I've seen a number of people here recommend SS trim screws to fasten Azek.
Here's a fastening schedule for Versatex, and I'm going to guess that Azek isn't remarkably different.

Do an advanced search, been discussed before.
I've done a lot of them with azec beaded and never a problem using the Paslode 16GA.
Because it is on a ceiling and not in direct sun, it never seems to change temp enough for lineal growth to cause any buckling.
If somebody had trouble with nails splitting and chipping it, I'm guessing they had it too cold when working it.

I just used 16 ga. SS and it worked like a charm.

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
I've used my 18 ga. brad nailer, thru the tongue, SS fasteners. If your using Azek 1/2 x 6 x 18' pcs. just go full length, hence no butt joints.
Obviously if the max run is 18' or under. Looks less than that looking at the picture. You could also sheath the joists (1/2) ply, and nail to that, with an appropriate adhesive. If the material is NOT going to be painted any face nailing holes can be filled with Crayola Crayon White,
invisible results.
18 ga huh? I have a up to 2" 18 ga. gun, I also have a 15ga. gun, no 16 I would thing the 15 would hold better but will it blow the tounge out?"
Yes, the 18 ga. has worked fine for me, location 50 miles No. of NYC. It was a 12 foot run, client did not want butt joints so each pc. had 6' of cut off. Was used elsewhere later. I did nail into 1/2 inch ply.
I've used 16 ga. SS and 18 ga. SS. To tell you the truth, both worked fine on 16" OC framing. That's with the planks not the 4X8 sheets.
Be a bit careful to make sure the tongue is seated fully in the groove and be aware it's hard to do without a helper because it's such floppy stuff.
Thanks, mostly for verifying the plan I had! its 16" OC and the planks not sheets, stainless nails but I going to have to try 15ga hopfully that is not a problem. Im just not sure about the 18
