I am restoring an old house and stripping the painted trim. I have to repair and replace plaster in the rooms also. I was wondering if anyone could advise me which project should be done first: 1) Stain/finish the wood or 2) finish all plaster work.
Thanks,

Stain on the plastered walls won't matter but wet plaster on the finished trim might so I'd do it in the order it would have been done originally -- plaster first.
*Unless whole walls of plaster has to be removed, I'd do plaster first. Wet plaster off stained and varnished trim comes off with a fingernail. Stain on plaster is tough, and has to be painted.Hit your search button for topics on plaster repair. Lots of different opinions. I gravitate toward using diamond lathe and plaster fix for small repairs, tape and joint compound for cracks, and 1/2" drywall for whole walls.Good Luck!!
*plaster mess, then nice woodwwork.
*I'm doing the same project right now, and have pondered the same question... I say trim first. I found that stripping is the messiest, nastiest part of the job, so get that out of the way first. Then, get the stain and finish on your trim before you accidentally splatter it with mud, primer, or paint. It should be easier to scrape any such mess off the finished surface than sand/strip it off the bare woodwork... for the second time.
*Get all but the final coat of varnish on the trim. Mask it off and do the plaster work. Unmask the trim (clean any masking tape ahesive off with paint thinner if necessary) and apply the final coat. then paint the walls. Or you could paint the walls before you remove the masking from the trim. Anyway, Ive got several of these jobs under my belt and thats what's worked for me. BTW remember to sand between coats on the trim and clean up with tack cloth or the second coat of varnish could flake off.Have Fun :)
*Todd1st-Plasterwork 2nd- strip woodwork. you don't want to have to take plaster stains out of bare wood. Or any other job related slobbers. :)3rd- stain & finish woodwork4th- paint wallsThis is assuming that you are not removing the woodwork Enjoy, Barry
