Fix Vapor Barrier – installed wrong side of cathedral ceiling gable wall to unheated attic
Cathedral ceiling, with one gable wall shared with an unheated attic space. Gable wall is 2 x4, sheetrocked.
Gable wall in question, was insulated with kraft faced insulation installed from the attic side (the vapor barrier is installed on the unheated side). The vapor barrier of course should have been installed on the heated side.
We are seeing some minor condensation.
Some in forum suggest removing the insulation and back-prime the side of the sheetrock facing the attic, using oil based primer. Then replace with unfaced insulation. We are trying to avoid painting in this enclosed attic, w/poor egress, due to concerns about fumes in what is essentially a confined space.
Are there other remedies? Stapling a plastic vapor barrier to line the back of the sheet rock in each stud bay? Water based primer/sealer just as good?
Appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

You can use a layer of polyethylene and either tape or caulk it to the sides of the studs (a few staples can help hold if you need them) Cut a couple inches wider than the stud bay.
They also sell latex paint formulated to be a moisture vapor barrier.

Of course, the location and heating zone of the house has to inform choice of any vapor barrier.
Thank You for the detailed reply, this is very helpful. House is located in middle of MA, has Oil fired FHW through baseboards.
