Fixing Laminate countertops

| Posted in General Discussion on June 4, 2000 11:01am

I have a chip in a plastic laminate counter top 1/4″ in diameter. I have the colored epoxy the mfr sent, but it didn’t hold. What else can I do?

    Hi Duane,

It should have worked. Try is again, but make sure that you have the area perfectly clean of any oils.

*Duane, at various ages any of my 3 sons would have thought a sticker was the answer. Sounds like one of those Chiquita Bananna stickers would be about the right size for your chip. Joe H

*Duane, After cleaning with lacquer thinner, take a utility knife and try to etch that spot. Then seamfil. Seamfil doesn't seem to hold well except where it's intended. You might even have better luck drilling a hole with a bradpt bit down to the substrate. Don't do this near a corner and maybe don't do it at all. Never tried it but gave it some thought. Maybe you shouldn't listen to this. Sorry. Experiment on some scrap and give us the answer that works.

*Duane, I have used seamfil and found it worked in the past on plain colored tops, but another painfully slow but usually effective method is to hand paint in the colors over top use some of those acrylic paints you find at craft/hobby stores they have hundreds of colors and shades.Take some scrap counter top with you if you have it to make your choice easier. But really though no matter what you end up doing it's only going to be close. The other way is to route out a small square and drop in a new patch and then seamfil the patch. You have to be really comfortable and accurate with your laminate trimmer and templates so that would be the court of last resort.Practice on a sample counter top.Good Luck Larry S. P.S.if you don't have a piece left over use the sample chip from the display rack at the store/suppliers,having it also helps when making up the template.

*For best match talk to the mfg about why it didn't work the first time. Then try again. After that you pays your money and you takes your chances on how close it will match and whether you are willing to put up with it.

*1/4" is a lot to fill with seamfill. Find the mfg of the laminate, Pionite, Wilson Art, Formica, etc and get a small sample square that hangs on the pegboard display and get a local to do an inlay using that piece. With seamfill on the edges, it should blend in.

*The seamfill directions state that it isn't for small and shallow chips; supposed to be okay for bigger ones. If the chip feathers to a very shallow depression at the edges, (hope that makes sense) that may be the problem. You may need to excavate it so the seamfill can get a grip.

*I've never had much luck fixing a chip in plastic lam. I'd say draw a big red circle around it and tell your friends that's where the aliens landed. Or better than that, call the Enquirer and tell them it looks like the Virgin Mary. People will flock to your door and pay $10 each just to see it.Sorry, I haven't been much help.Ed. Williams

*Don't laugh; the image of Jesus appeared on the brick wall of a donut shop around here, people flocked to it for days, came from great distances.

*You've got to admit Adrian, the Lick-a-Chick across the road from that Tim Hortons made a load of business while the faithful were congregating in their parking lot.Gabe

Duane, although I've never tried this, you might want to give it a go. 1) Glue up a small piece of matching laminate on an appropriate substrate. (mdf, particle bd., etc.) On a repair this small you could just get a free sample chip from your local home center. 2) Chuck a non-tapered plug-cutter in a drill press and make a few "laminate plugs". 3) Carefully drill out the damaged area of countertop. (A drill guide may help.) 4) Glue in the repair plug flush.

Of course you should try this on a scrap piece first. Good luck, and let me know if it works.
