My dad’s pipe that runs through his basement wall to the septic has cracked right where the pipe meets the elbow on the outside of the wall. The guy at our local hardware store told him to use goop on the crack. I think we need to cut out the elbow and replace it with new. Am I right or is this goop stuff really that good.

Gil,
What type of pipe (PVC, cast iron, ABS)?
What type of goop?
Why did the pipe crack?
How did you become aware that the pipe was cracked?
There,,,,, I've answered your one question w four questions.
Your likely better off replacing the pipe.
Best of luck, Harry
It is pvc, not sure about goop (i've never heard of it untill today). We don't know how it cracked, I guess the house settling. We knew it was leaking because of a sewer gas smell and the block wall was wet below the pipe.
Looks like it's time to get the shovel out.Get what you need exposed, and install a new section of pipe.Harry
Looks like we will replace it. What should we use to fill in between the pipe and wall once we make the repair?
If you make a too large hole, mix up some mortar. let it cure up, then you could water seal it with goop, LOLIf you don't make too large a gap, use hydraulic patching cement. One thing that was mentioned earlier is important to try and determine...the cause of this. Sometimes a house settles, but another I have seen is when the pipe exits too hight near ground surface, it is in the portion of soil that heaves when it freezes, so the lifting soil can break it off again. If that might be the case, take steps to insure against that.Whether the crack appears at top or bottom of the line can tel you something about that.

Are you saying to make sure the pipe is below the frost line, because it is.
