Hi all
A question that has come up on me time after time.
You know the crank out casement windows.
I always gwt stuck trying to fix the ones that don’t close.
One manufacturer said to replace the weaterproofing gaskets, which
didn’t help at all.
I asked about sanding them down a little and another manufacturer said it wouldn’t work, said to replace the entire unit, yeah right.
I have installed handles on some to help pull them closed, but that
seems like a real long term dud.
One person kept pushing his closed from the outside, now the window
is starting to seperate, I’ll need to replace that for sure.
All are out of warrantee, but I need to come up with a good solution
to this problem as I don’t think replacement will make the customers
happy.
Oh, all different brands; Hurd, Anderson, etc.
I did sand and/or removed gaskets on some to correct for bad painting
and swelling from moisture, but hope I can come up with a better plan.
Any good ideas, thoughts, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My house had caradco brand tall and narrow casements and the crank mechanism lacks the power to open the window. i think its a design / mechanical advantage problem.
Every window in the house is like that. all double pane.
In my experience, the scissor hardware is the culprit most of the time. Where I live, there are 3 or 4 sources for the stuff, most of the stuff is made by Truth Hardware. They make replacement stuff too.
I've found that replacing the scissors, removing the sashes, totally cleaning up the jambe, and lubing the hardware works wonders. However, if this effort doesn't work, you've got to look at the structure around the window; header sagging, etc.
The two-part wood filler works realy well when fixing those broken corners.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll be looking at the windows maybe
friday and give your suggestions a try. I think this set is Anderson, so I know where to get parts locally.
I don't think the corners of these are bad, but I know another house
I'll be at in a few weeks are awful. I suspect I may need to replace
at least one that I remember was trashed.
This forum is great, I have answers between breakfast and lunch (or
dinner, when I'm out all day) when I usually check it.
And usually the info is great.
I don't know how you guys do it.
Now if I could only solve my computer problems so fast.
Thanks again
Jeff
I have Pella's and it seem that mine problem is always dirt, insects, and lubrication.
I have small brush that I use. It is like an "acid brush", but has stiff fiberglass brisles. I use that to clean out the grove around the window. Specially the track where the window hinges slide in.
Then I lub every thing that pivots, slides, or rotates.
They work fine after that for a few years.
my caradcos have truth hardware.
i do not know if the truth stuff is junk or if caradco has missapplied it.
does not work well too weak
